Kvitashvili wants to jail those who built the new Okhmatdet building.
Health Minister Alexander Kvitashvili intends to punish everyone involved in the construction of the new building of the Okhmatdet National Children's Specialized Hospital.
He stated this at a briefing today, January 06.
Here's a quote from the minister, taken from the NBN website: "I would do this... Conduct an audit of what was being built and where the money went. I would jail those who stole it and take back the stolen money. I would use that money to complete the new building of Okhmatdet. I don't care how long they serve—twenty, thirty. The main thing is to get the money back. That's how it was in Georgia, and I sincerely hope that it will be the same in Ukraine one day. I tell you this as a new citizen of Ukraine."
As a reminder, in 2008, Okhmatdet was nationalized by Viktor Yushchenko, then President of Ukraine. His wife, Katherine-Claire Chumachenko, raised funds for its construction through the Ukraine-3000 Foundation, calling the project "The Children's Hospital of the Future." A charity marathon raised 140 million hryvnias. Budget funds were also allocated for the reconstruction.
Despite the high-profile PR campaign, the Okhmatdet renovation and construction of the new building turned into a scam. In 2011, members of parliament became interested in the disappearance of the funds raised and allocated, but the matter quickly died down.
