Has Alfa-Bank launched an information attack against the Furshet network?

buffetA major scandal is erupting at the instigation of one of the shareholders of the Alfa-Bank group (ABH Ukraine Ltd), who, in cooperation with a major European bank, has initiated litigation aimed at immediately recovering a hefty $24 million from a British shareholder in the Ukrainian supermarket chain Furshet. This amount is designated as a debt for loans that the defendant allegedly does not intend to repay.

The impetus for this activity, launched in Cyprus, was the movement of assets within Furshet, which Alfa-Bank's co-owners declared to be nothing more than the withdrawal of funds from circulation to offshore accounts for the purpose of subsequent liquidation or bankruptcy of the company. Naturally, representatives of the Furshet network deny such accusations, arguing that, in the most recent reporting period alone, they have managed to empty the loan portfolio from an initial amount of $186,7 million to $39,6 million (including accrued interest).

It is also noted that they have successfully negotiated with other banks, such as Kreditprombank, PrivatBank, Raiffeisen Bank Aval, OTP Bank, UkrSibbank, and others, and resolved the debt issue through a compromise. For their part, Furshet's management is confident that Alfa-Bank's true goal is "...a planned information attack, initiated with the aim of discrediting and undermining the company's market position and supplier trust in the chain," the retail chain's representatives assert.

Nevertheless, the court found the plaintiff's claims justified and ordered the freezing of the accounts and assets of not only the debtor but also its subsidiaries. The company's top decision-makers were also included: their accounts and assets were also frozen.
