Vega operator Farlep-Invest, a private joint-stock company controlled by Rinat Akhmetov, has acquired part of MTS Ukraine's fixed-line business. This was announced by MTS Ukraine.
Comstar Ukraine's assets, which were integrated into MTS several years ago, have reportedly been sold to Farlep-Invest, a private joint-stock company that operates Vega. The transaction amount has not been disclosed, but market participants previously estimated the market value of Comstar's assets at UAH 32 million.
As a reminder, Comstar Ukraine has been providing services in Odesa since 1996. In October 2009, MTS acquired a controlling stake in the company. At the end of 2011, Comstar Ukraine, together with MTS, launched the first section of a high-speed wired internet network in Kyiv for commercial use. MTS Ukraine uses this network to provide broadband fixed internet access and fixed-line telephony to subscribers in the Odesa region and Kyiv. This network has approximately 18 subscribers, of whom approximately 7 use the interactive internet TV (IPTV) service.
MTS Ukraine announced that the company plans to focus on its core business—mobile communications—as well as the mass rollout of a 3G network and high-speed wireless data transfer. Therefore, fixed-line telephony and wired internet access for the mass market are not the company's core business.
It was also reported that MTS Ukraine will continue to service fixed-line telephony subscribers until June 30, 2015, and fixed-line internet access subscribers until April 30.
