For the past couple of weeks, the political airwaves have been filled with discussions of prime minister candidates. There weren't many contenders, and arguments for lengthy debate quickly dried up. The ministerial positions are a different matter. That's where things get more complicated. These ministers haven't proven sufficiently "technocratic," and there's no sign yet of a deep bench for replacements. While talk of changes at the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Economic Development is still vague, there's already a contender for the post of the country's top fiscal official. Or rather, a female contender. It's no secret that Nina Yuzhanina, head of the Verkhovna Rada's Customs and Tax Policy Committee, has strong appetites for the position. Isn't that true, Nina Petrovna? Like a true woman, she quickly changes her mind. Previously, she really coveted the position of her banking colleague, the Minister of Finance. But her feminine inconsistency has taken over, and now she's lusting after the chairmanship of the State Fiscal Service. The committee head has repeatedly spoken negatively about both the State Fiscal Service and the Ministry of Finance, hinting that she knows how to "save" the country's tax system, unlike the currently appointed heads of departments. Committee sources say talk of moving to Lvivska Street has been circulating in their hallways for some time.
If Nina Petrovna's ambitions are realized, the 50-strong fiscal machine could feel the fragile feminine hand of the presidential auditor general. Furthermore, if the finance minister remains the same, a female friendship will develop. This tandem threatens a veritable "war of the worlds." Furthermore, the current head of the fiscal agency has long been an eyesore with his "re-convictions."
Yuzhanin's chances of taking her predecessor's current seat on the committee are unclear. On the one hand, she's a presidential protégé, and has never hidden it. As one online publication wrote, "She knows more about the president's money than he does" (and maybe about offshore accounts, too?!?!). On the other hand, the president and parliament need such a person right now. For now, one can only speculate on whether gender will be taken into account when selecting candidates for the country's top financiers.
