Former Deputy Prosecutor General Mykola Gerasimyuk used an offshore platform for “black payments” in 2014-2015.
The scheme involves processing payments through a chain of offshore companies, which conceals the origin of the funds and the connection between the sender and recipient. According to the Swift payment system, Gerasimyuk processed payments through Smartus Business LLP (UK).
The payments were used to purchase real estate and pay for the education of Gerasimyuk's daughter. It should be noted that this scheme is already common among a number of Ukrainian officials. For example, similar funds were transferred for the maintenance of Petro Poroshenko's jet and for Igor Kononenko's daughter's hotel accommodations in Switzerland.
This scheme is also used to pay for illegal shipments. Specifically, in 2011, the Ukrainian company Ukrinmash supplied weapons to Libya in violation of UN sanctions.
It should be noted that in June-December 2014, Gerasimyuk was the First Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
