On the morning of December 1, a group of unknown individuals, accompanied by police, stormed the Orion plant. OTKAT journalists dialed the plant's director, Nikolai Kushchak, and he stated the following: "Right now, there are 12 people standing around me. These are our 'guests' at the plant and several police officers."
He made no further comments and contact with him was lost.
As is known, attempts to seize Orion have been underway since 2007. Director Kushchak was accused of allegedly accepting a bribe. The hostile takeover, according to some reports, was the work of former MP Oleksandr Dubovoy, whom Mykola Kushchak had approached to protect the plant.
Kyiv investigative journalist Serhiy Leshchenko shared some interesting information about Dubovoy on Hromadske TV: "Dubovoy influences many personnel decisions. In the Odesa region, he lobbied for the appointment of Interior Minister Petro Lutsyuk, who was removed after the mass deaths on May 2. At the state level, the Izmail politician places 'his' people at the helm of state-owned enterprises. Moreover, like Turchynov, he is a Baptist. A very interesting character. I think we'll have a lot more to say about him later... Kyiv residents can see Mr. Dubovoy's enormous palace without even realizing who owns it."
