The former head of the Marents agricultural fund was arrested.

bribe bucksThe Kyiv Court of Appeals has arrested Oleksandr Marents, a native of the Donetsk region and former head of the Agrarian Fund of Ukraine. He is accused of embezzling 521 million hryvnias of public funds. This was reported in a ruling by the court of second instance dated October 29, 2015, posted on the Unified Register of Court Cases.

Although the court documents do not indicate the name of the former head of the Agrarian Fund of Ukraine who was arrested, it is known that he is a native of the Donetsk region and headed the Agrarian Fund of Ukraine in 2010-2011. Therefore, the media speculated that this was Oleksandr Marents.

Prosecutor's investigators established that the official embezzled UAH 521,385 million from the Agrofund in 2010. The fund was supposed to use this state money to purchase granulated sugar from Oil River and Albenta. However, the companies failed to fulfill the contract terms, and the funds ended up in the accounts of other agricultural firms.

At the first court hearing, Judge Krystyna Tarasyuk of Kyiv's Pechersky District Court refused to remand the former official into custody, instead imposing house arrest. Prosecutors subsequently challenged this decision on appeal.

If the former official is found guilty, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
