A figure in the Yushchenko poisoning scandal has been appointed as Poroshenko's adviser.

Igor Smeshko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko appointed Ihor Smeshko (pictured) as his advisor. This was stated in Presidential Decree No. 759/2014 of October 7, 2014.

"Appoint Igor Petrovich Smeshko as advisor to the President of Ukraine," the document states.

As a reminder, Smeshko was already appointed Advisor to the President on April 19, 2014. He was then appointed to this position by Acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov.

Smeshko was born on August 17, 1955 in the city of Khristinovka, Khristinovsky district, Cherkasy region.

In 1977, he graduated from the S. M. Kirov Kyiv Higher Anti-Aircraft Missile Engineering School, and in 1982, he completed his postgraduate studies as a military engineer in radio engineering. In 2002, Smeshko graduated from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, specializing in Jurisprudence and qualifying as a lawyer.

In 1972 he began serving in the Soviet Army.

In January–August 1992, he was the executive secretary of the Expert Scientific Council of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

From August 1992 to July 1995 - Military, Naval, Air Force and Defense Attaché of Ukraine to the United States.

From July 1995 to April 1998, he was the chairman, and from April 1998 to February 1999, he was the deputy chairman of the Intelligence Committee under the President of Ukraine.

From June 1997 to September 2000, he was the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

From September 2000 to October 2001 - Defense Attaché, Military Attaché at the Embassy of Ukraine in the Swiss Confederation - Permanent Representative of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine to international organizations in Geneva.

From October 2002 to September 2003, he was Chairman of the Committee on Military-Technical Cooperation and Export Control Policy under the President of Ukraine.

From November 2002 to June 2003, he was Deputy Secretary, and from June to September 2003, First Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

From September 4, 2003 to February 4, 2005 - Chairman of the Security Service of Ukraine, member of the National Security and Defense Council (September 2003 - February 2005). Member of the Coordination Committee for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime under the President of Ukraine (March 2004 - February 2005).

On December 12, 2005, Smeshko was discharged from military service with the rank of colonel general. In 2006, he began his political career.
