The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has informed Azarov of his suspicion of treason.

Mykola Azarov

The State Bureau of Investigation, in agreement with the prosecutor of the Office of the Prosecutor General, has notified former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov of suspicion of committing high treason by prior conspiracy with a group of persons, reports press servicesand the State Bureau of Investigation.

"The pre-trial investigation established that the content and terms of the Agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet on Ukrainian territory were imposed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on then-Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikolai Azarov in Moscow at two o'clock in the morning on April 21, 2010, on the eve of the signing.

Having a full understanding of the consequences of signing the said Agreement of Ukraine, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine fulfilled his assigned role in committing the crime, namely, he ensured the approval and coordination of the draft documents by the relevant officials (ministers, heads of law enforcement agencies, and on behalf of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine), and contributed to the realization of the interests of the Russian Federation at all stages of approval of the draft Agreement until its implementation.

The investigation has obtained original documents attesting to the deliberate actions of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, which undermined Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This subsequently led to the occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation," the statement reads.

The actions in question were committed by prior conspiracy between a group of individuals and the then President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, who is currently hiding from the pre-trial investigation body in another country.
