On Friday, October 10, in Kramatorsk, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced the dismissal of Serhiy Taruta and the appointment of Oleksandr Kikhtenko as head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration.
This was reported by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
"The President just thanked Serhiy Taruta for his work and introduced the new head of the Regional State Administration, Oleksandr Kikhtenko," said Svyatoslav Tsegolko, the President's press secretary.
Earlier, Sergei Taruta confirmed his resignation as governor of the Donetsk region in a comment to Obozrevatel.
It should be noted that in 2001, Kikhtenko became the First Deputy Commander of the Internal Troops of Ukraine and Chief of Staff of the Internal Troops. From February 2005, he became the Commander of the Internal Troops of Ukraine, and was promoted to Colonel General in March 2006.
Also in April 2007, General Kikhtenko was appointed a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. The military rank of General of the Army was conferred by decree of former President Viktor Yushchenko on August 23, 2008.
Since March 2014, businessman Serhiy Taruta has led the Donetsk region. He has repeatedly criticized Petro Poroshenko's peace initiatives and advocated for the introduction of martial law in Ukraine and the cancellation of elections.
