During a search of a Moscow bank, the State Fiscal Service seized documents from a securities custodian company that served Kurchenko.
The State Fiscal Service (SFS) has thwarted an attempt by notorious Russian businessman Serhiy Kurchenko to sell his assets worth UAH 5 billion.
According to the State Fiscal Service's press service for financial investigations, during a search of a Moscow bank's office, conducted as part of a criminal investigation, officers from the State Fiscal Service's financial investigations department discovered and seized documents from a securities custodian company. This company provided services to enterprises controlled by businessman Kurchenko.
The custodian company's accounts held electronically securities belonging to the oligarch, including shares in an oil refinery, a football club, a stadium, several banks, and an insurance company. "The securities, with a total nominal value of UAH 5,4 billion, were purchased with illegally obtained funds," the statement reads.
The agency reported that the National Securities and Stock Market Commission (NSSMC), acting on instructions from the State Fiscal Service, prohibited any transactions involving securities owned by Kurchenko. "The shares will be 'frozen', as their acquisition effectively amounts to the laundering of illegally obtained funds. Thus, losses to the state budget equal to the value of the securities were prevented," the Fiscal Service stated. The investigation is ongoing, according to the statement.
As a reminder, in May, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov announced that companies within Serhiy Kurchenko's VETEK holding company had imported over 5 million tons of petroleum products worth UAH 36 billion into Ukraine over the past two years using fictitious documents. According to the documents, these petroleum products were not intended for sale in Ukraine but were instead destined for third countries, allowing Kurchenko's companies to evade taxes.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Kurchenko's criminal proceeds from these activities amounted to approximately 7 billion hryvnias. Kurchenko has now been placed on an international wanted list, and law enforcement agencies are taking steps to apprehend him.
