The current head of Ukrgazvydobuvannya, Oleg Prokhorenko, earns a salary of 1 million hryvnias per month, according to Serhiy Sherbina on Facebook.
By comparison, Yulia Poroshenko, the Ukrainian president's daughter-in-law, once worked alongside Prokhorenko as an associate at the international corporation McKinsey. Over the course of a year, the Ukrainian guarantor's relative earned $76 (1,9 million hryvnias at the current exchange rate) at the company.
Prokhorenko explained the high salary by saying that he and his team worked "as volunteers" for six months, after which their salaries were raised to market levels. It's worth noting that a salary of 1 million hryvnias is equivalent to approximately $40, clearly above the market average. The fact that Ukrgazvydobuvannya is a state-owned company adds a special twist.
Overall, it turns out that working for a government agency can offer significant financial advancement. But only for some.
