Valeria Gontareva took over the National Bank on June 19, 2014 (Stepan Kubiv previously held the position), thus serving in this responsible position for a full two years. It's time to take stock of her performance. Especially since in 2015 alone, her income amounted to 1,75 million hryvnias—a significant sum enough to indicate positive results.

First of all, the official hryvnia exchange rate has more than halved (from 11,85 to 24,91 hryvnias per US dollar), while gold and foreign exchange reserves have shrunk from $17,9 billion to $13,2 billion. Ukraine's financial system has also suffered: 102 banks remain out of 167, and annual inflation has ranged from 10,9% to 7,5%, with an estimated 43,3% today. Of course, all of these "achievements" can hardly be attributed entirely to the head of an institution like the National Bank, but observers believe she deserves considerable credit for them.
