The Prosecutor General's Office has opened a criminal case against Zaporizhzhia Mayor Volodymyr Buryak. He is suspected of illegally dismissing Valeriy Bezlepkin, director of the Zaporizhzhia City Council's Department of Housing and Utilities.

The Prosecutor General's Office is conducting an investigation under Article 172 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—"gross violation of labor laws."

As Olha Meshok, press secretary for the Zaporizhzhia mayor's office, noted, Valeriy Bezlepkin was dismissed within legal limits "due to the elimination of the position of director of the housing and utilities department." Bezlepkin was offered another vacant position, but he declined it and filed a lawsuit against Buryak. In court, Bezlepkin's lawyers are demanding the mayor's suspension from office pending the investigation and trial.

According to the Prosecutor General's Office, Zaporizhzhia Mayor Buryak may also become a defendant in another criminal case involving officials of the Zaporizhzhia City Council and the Zaporizhstal Steel Works. Prosecutor General's Office representative Vladislav Kutsenko stated that this criminal case was opened due to non-payment of funds for the development of transport, engineering, and social infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia, which resulted in the city budget losing 150 million hryvnias.
