The thefts involved cost the state approximately one billion hryvnias. The corruption scheme, orchestrated by Mykola Zlochevsky, the former head of the Ministry of Ecology (under Azarov's cabinet) (read more: Why does the devil wear Prada, and Zlochevsky wear Zlocci? ), was based on the activities of the company Esko-Pivnich. The frauds committed with its participation fall under Articles 205 and 212 of the Criminal Code and are classified as fictitious entrepreneurship and tax evasion.
Specifically, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko stated: "The company Esko-Pivnich, founded by the British company Burisma, used a series of fictitious entities to shift its profits into fictitious expenses, thereby evading income taxes." Notably, other than the director of this company and his inner circle, no one else is facing charges; only Zlochevsky will be held accountable for his actions.
The holding's representatives issued a statement stating that "...the group has always been transparent in its operations, and therefore, if violations are identified and their legality is proven in court, Burisma guarantees the payment of all necessary additional payments... The company has dozens of partners and contractors in its operations. If the investigation uncovers any unscrupulous actions on their part, Burisma declares its readiness to assist in identifying and prosecuting the violations..." They also ask the Prosecutor General's Office not to block the activities of the gas production group of companies.
