Ilya Kiva - the new "grandfather of communist Kaletnik"?

Ilya Kiva

At a hastily convened extraordinary session, the Bucha City Council allocated one hectare of land to the All-Ukrainian Union of ATO Veterans. The land is designated for an apartment building. Or houses. This organization is headed by the notorious Ilya Kiva, loyal to Arsen Avakov. When contacted in Turkey, Kiva denied any knowledge of such a decision by the Bucha City Council and, shouting, announced that they had requested this land so that ATO veterans could build houses or farm there. He also asked Hromadske Radio journalist Hryhoriy Pyrlik if he was a Russian spy.

The Prosecutor General's Office still hasn't announced the promised charges against Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk and his godfather, Irpin Mayor Volodymyr Karplyuk. "These investigations themselves will inevitably lead to the next procedural decisions and the transfer of the case to court. The charges will be filed within the next few days," Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko declared in Uzhhorod on July 22. Today is the 14th day. Apparently, not the "nearest" one. Because Volodymyr Gutsulyak, Head of the Department for Investigating Particularly Important Cases in the Economy, announced that charges haven't yet been filed. And they are expected to be filed within a month! “We are now engaged in this, in this direction,” says Gutsulyak. Do you know why it took so long? Because, he says, there is a lot of work: “We are currently working on the analysis and processing of a huge amount of speech evidence, obtained during the course of searching. “If there are results of this analysis and investigation, then you will make decisions about the involvement of Fedoruk and Karplyuk to the point of criminality.”

It seems that today is the right time to recall how former Vice Speaker Igor Kaletnik (Read more: Igor Kaletnik. The story of Ukraine's chief customs officer and his smuggler friends.) received those same 14 hectares of land in Bucha. Subsequently, courts at all levels ruled that he had acquired it illegally.

In 2010, communist Igor Kaletnik chaired the parliamentary Committee on Combating Organized Crime and Corruption. Viktor Barkholenko, an activist and then-member of the Irpen City Council, wrote to this committee about the illegal seizure of 890 hectares of forest in Bucha from the state. Kaletnik was impressed and wrote a letter to the Prosecutor General. Alexander Medvedko, like, look what's going on!

Letter from the Prosecutor General, signed by Igor Kaletnik

In the letter, Kaletnik describes in detail how the forest in Bucha became "land covered with trees and shrubs" and was given over to development. He emphasizes that the decision of the Bucha village council (at that time) was signed by Anatoly Fedoruk. Finally, Kaletnik even demands that a criminal case be opened against the village council officials, specifically Fedoruk.

But Kaletnik later stopped fighting what he considered to be the illegal expropriation of the land. And his 92-year-old grandfather became the proud owner of 14 hectares of forest near Kyiv.

I remembered this story because I'm afraid Ilya Kiva might become "the new grandfather of communist Kaletnik." The scheme is well-established.
