On January 27, 2015, the Deposit Guarantee Fund appointed a temporary administration to Imexbank in Odessa. The bank had been experiencing difficulties with deposit payments for a long time. Since August 2014, depositors began complaining on forums about delays in deposit payments.
On January 15, 2015, Imexbank was declared a bank in trouble. Shareholders and management were required to submit a financial recovery plan, but failed to do so. Meanwhile, Imexbank, despite the NBU's prohibition, repaid its investors' debt early, leading to a decline in capital and liquidity, and the bank became insolvent.
Imexbank was among the largest banks in Ukraine. In the fall, it ranked 21st in the system, down from 23rd at the beginning of 2014. Over the past year, larger institutions, such as Brokbusinessbank and VAB Bank, which ranked 16th and 17th, have been withdrawn from the market. As of October 1, Imexbank held UAH 5,27 billion in current and term accounts. The amount of deposits eligible for guaranteed compensation by the Deposit Guarantee Fund for these depositors has not yet been calculated.
As a reminder, Odessa-based Imexbank was controlled by MP Leonid Klimov. In the previous parliament, he was a member of the Party of Regions faction. In the current Verkhovna Rada, he is a member of the Economic Development group.
