Food inflation as a reflection of the economic situation in Ukraine

consumer basketWhatever government officials and statisticians claim, inflation is clearly felt by every Ukrainian citizen during a routine grocery shopping trip. Surprisingly, the data provided does show price declines in food products: compared to prices a year ago, the prices of fruits (2,7%) and vegetables (4,2%) have decreased. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for other items in the food basket. Sugar saw the largest price increase: it rose by almost 27%, followed by milk (20,3%), dairy-related products (18,4%), and soft drinks (18,7%). Prices for other everyday food items increased by between 7,2% (fish) and 14,2% (bread).
