Ruslan Grigorenko. Personnel purges at the SBU: why the head of the Sumy department lost his job.
In the summer, the President of Ukraine dismissed SBU Director Ivan Bakanov, his deputy Volodymyr Gorbenko, and several other heads of regional departments. Specifically, he appointed new heads for the Kharkiv and Sumy regions. What was the reason for this? Editorial Staff 368 media analyzed the latest information and concluded that there are two main reasons - betrayal and corruption.
As you know, the former head of the SBU's Internal Security Directorate, Andriy Naumov, was first arrested in Serbia on suspicion of money laundering. He fled Ukraine after the war began.
Later, the former head of the SBU department in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Oleg Kulinich, was detained while attempting to escape. We discovered that he intentionally hid information about the beginning of the invasion from Crimea. This prevented the organization of a defense and led to the capture of Kherson.
Roman Dudin, the head of the SBU department in the Kharkiv region, was subsequently dismissed and detained. He was charged with treason and unauthorized absence from duty, committed under martial law. According to the investigation, the suspect obstructed the functioning of the unified command system of the security and defense forces and failed to carry out the functions and tasks assigned to the SBU in the region. He also carried out multiple actions aimed at removing the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration from office.
Not long before this incident, the head of the regional SBU department committed suicide in Kropyvnytskyi. Alexander NakonechnyMedia reports indicate he may have had some kind of illness, but there is no definitive information as to why he committed suicide. Meanwhile, the acting head of the Institute for Training Legal Personnel for the Security Service of the Yaroslav the Wise National Law University was detained on suspicion of treason.
The dismissal of Ruslan Grigorenko, head of the SBU department in Sumy Oblast, is a separate story. The reasons for his dismissal were not officially disclosed to Ukrainians. But there are some details that allow us to understand. Grigorenko was embroiled in a scandal last year. That summer, five of his subordinates were found drunk near the Ukrainian-Russian border.
According to media reports, the SBU officers were celebrating the promotion of one of their number to duty rank. They were spotted by a border guard patrol. Three SBU officers approached the guards in a Renault Duster and provoked a conflict. Both border guards were conscripts—one a sergeant, the other a private. The SBU officers confiscated their AK-74 assault rifles and ammunition and drove away in a Toyota RAV4. The attackers later threw the confiscated rifles into a cornfield.

The participants in the incident were reportedly the head of the SBU inter-district department, his deputy, and three other subordinates. Three of them attacked the border guards. However, only two of them were detained—the deputy chief and one of the rank-and-file employees. The chief, however, was suddenly cleared of any wrongdoing and allegedly had no involvement in the attack. One of the officers subsequently pleaded guilty and was stripped of his military rank of lieutenant. As for the lieutenant colonel, there is still no information. However, the head of the regional department was not fired for some reason. Apparently, this is due to his patrons in the Presidential Office and the specific nature of his work.
Media started writing Grigorenko is Bakanov's personal aide in all manner of criminal cases and provocations. Specifically, he is personally responsible for collecting and delivering to Kyiv illegal cash obtained from smuggling cigarettes, drugs, weapons, and ammunition. Grigorenko is also handling cases related to illegal taps into gas and oil pipelines running through the Sumy region.
Ruslan Grigorenko has been under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation for a long time, as a person involved in organizing and operating a channel for the transfer of illegal goods from the LPR and DPR through Russia, Ukraine, to Turkey, and Western European countries. After the incident with the border guards, Grigorenko, in a conversation with Bakanov, received personal guarantees that he would remain on the award list until August 24 if he cleared the inter-district department chief, a relative of Naumov, and brought the remaining employees to justice.
So, with Bakanov's dismissal, his subordinate also left. Moreover, Bakanov, like Ruslan Grigorenko, had close contacts with the traitor Naumov. As a reminder, the SBU's own deputy head, Neskoromny, wanted to kill Naumov, and then also disappeared. And not a word from the authorities.
