Kolomoisky shut Akhmetov's mouth

Dnipropetrovsk's Channel 34, one of the channels of Rinat Akhmetov's Media Group Ukraine, was taken off the air on October 7 for unknown reasons. This was true not only for broadcast, but also for cable operators.

Earlier that day, there had been an attempt to shut down the channel, and later that day, its employees—according to our information—were barred from an event at the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration. We have determined that the shutdown of Channel 34 could not have been due to a technical glitch. Therefore, this constitutes gross interference in the work of the media, writes Rinat Akhmetov's newspaper Segodnia.
Here's what the channel is saying: "We've contacted the transmission center, the chief engineer, and the director directly. So far, no specifics. They're citing technical issues. We haven't received a direct answer to our question about whether this can be considered an outage. We're currently working to determine the cause," said Alexander Lyankevich, technical director of Channel 34.
The company hopes to establish today who and what is behind the interference with Channel 34 in Dnipro. This situation will undoubtedly attract the attention of both the Ukrainian authorities and international organizations. Shutting down a major regional channel during an election campaign cannot be considered anything other than an attack on freedom of speech. The channel believes the situation requires immediate intervention and investigation by the competent authorities—the National Council and the RRT Concern—in order to identify the real causes and restore the channel's normal operation.
