Who will become the head of Ukrposhta?

UkrpochtaAs previously reported, the selection process for the position of head of Ukrposhta officially began last week. It was also reported that the dismissed management, represented by Pankiv and Veselyi, are seeking to push their successor, Ivan Turchak, into the leadership position. However, the position is likely to be filled by Ihor Tkachuk, a top manager and current acting head of the company and the younger brother of a member of parliament from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc. Tkachuk is already assembling his team and announcing a reform plan.

As a reminder, Pankiv's deputy, Ihor Tkachuk, a current Vinnytsia City Council member from the UDAR party, was temporarily appointed to replace him. Commenting on the situation, Infrastructure Minister Andriy Pyvovarskyi stated in late December that he had "almost found" a new leader, "a very successful businessman who in no way competes with Ukrposhta." Pyvovarskyi did not name the candidate for the director's seat. However, he promised to personally oversee reforms at Ukrposhta, conduct management rotations, and conduct an audit with the participation of the foreign company Rothschild & Cie. After which, the company could likely be corporatized.

There was talk at Ukrposhta that the top position could very well be given to a foreign manager, say, from Germany's Deutsche Post or Britain's Royal Mail. After the competition for the top position was announced, crowds of applicants flocked to the Ministry of Infrastructure. Rumor has it that Andriy Khoroshevsky, the former director of Ukrposhta's Kyiv branch and one who was linked to Yanukovych's "family," is vying for the job. He was fired by Pankiv and later accused of embezzling $16 million. Volodymyr Gurkov, who also briefly headed the company's Kyiv office, is also considered a protégé of Oleksandr Malin, a friend and advisor to Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who became head of Ukravtodor last year. However, it appears that the current acting director is... Igor Tkachuk, the head of Ukrposhta, who is being pushed into the position by his older brother, Gennady Tkachuk, a BPP MP, has every chance of establishing himself as the head of Ukrposhta.

In an interview with one publication, Tkachuk stated that he had already initiated a number of internal investigations at the enterprise regarding the actions of the previous management.

"In particular, these include audits of the transparency of cash register procurement and the placement of the company's funds in the accounts of a dubious bank. Law enforcement agencies are also actively working in this area," says Tkachuk. He also declares his intention to implement reforms at the enterprise under his supervision.

But while the Ministry of Infrastructure is still accepting applications for the head position, Ihor Tkachuk has already begun appointing close associates to key positions within the company. On January 14, Vinnytsia Regional Council deputy Oleksandr Melnyk was appointed head of the Kyiv Directorate. Shortly before this, another fellow countryman of Ihor Tkachuk, Viktor Slobodanyuk, became acting first deputy general director of Ukrposhta.

Let us remind you that the competition to select the director of Ukrposhta will take place in February.
