Former Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin (Read more about it in the article Renat Kuzmin: The Family Business of Outlaw Prosecutors) told the publication Strana that the current President of Ukraine in 2009, being the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, together with the then Minister of Internal Affairs Yuriy Lutsenko, as well as Viktor Shokin, who was the Deputy Prosecutor General in 2009, falsified charges and arrested Boris Kolesnikov.
As Kuzmin noted, this was done in order to gain leverage over Kolesnikov's partner, Rinat Akhmetov, and "extort property and political preferences from the oligarch."
The fact that Petro Poroshenko offered to "make" $2 billion from Kolesnikov's illegal arrest was confirmed by then-Prosecutor General Svyatoslav Piskun. When Kolesnikov refused, the current president asked for no interference and made it clear that Shokin would be handling the "operation" to extort money and property from Akhmetov.
Renat Kuzmin stated that after Akhmetov refused to "bargain" with Poroshenko, Borys Kolesnikov was arrested on a trumped-up charge of organizing a crime against Borys Penchuk. Penchuk himself also admitted to testifying against Kolesnikov at the request of Yuriy Lutsenko.
The investigator who led the case against Kolesnikov also admitted that Viktor Shokin personally gave the instructions to falsify the case against Kolesnikov.
Kuzmin reported that Kolesnikov was subsequently released from custody and the case against him was closed. He personally handled the newly opened proceedings against the falsifiers.
Ultimately, Penchuk was convicted of perjury, and the case against Poroshenko, Lutsenko, and Shokin was quietly closed.
