Mass lustration has reached the Ministry of Defense.
Based on the results of a study of the personal files of high-ranking officials and military personnel, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak (read more about it Stepan Poltorak: The new Kuchma needs a new Kuzmuk), by his order dated October 25, 2014, in accordance with the criteria of the Law of Ukraine “On the Purification of Power”, dismissed the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel General Gennady Vorobyov.
According to the Defense Ministry's press service, the order also dismissed the Chief of Staff and First Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Major General Artur Artemenko, and the First Deputy Commander of the Ground Forces, Lieutenant General Sergei Bessarab.
In addition, these former high-ranking generals, according to the Law on Lustration, are prohibited from holding similar positions for 10 years.
This news has already been harshly criticized on their social media pages by the former Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, who was previously purged, Igor Kabanenko, as well as the adviser to the Minister of Defense Alexander Danylyuk.
"Former First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Gennady Vorobyov and former Chief of Staff – First Deputy Commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Artur Artemenko are highly professional generals, wise and authoritative leaders, and patriots of Ukraine. They are always with the troops. They prevented their use against the people. They defend Ukraine. There is no equal replacement," Kabanenko writes.
"First Deputy Chief of the General Staff, General Gennady Vorobyov, was targeted for lustration. He's a decent man, a professional, and a patriot. Before that, Admiral Igor Kabanenko, an exceptional specialist and patriot, was lustrated. That's all there is to lustration. Meanwhile, a whole bunch of corrupt officials, for whom dismissal orders were already prepared, are still on sick leave. They weren't targeted for lustration and, as I understand it, are planning to return to their comfortable positions," Danylyuk noted.
As previously reported, the "Law on the Purification of Government" came into effect on October 16 of this year. Lustration became widespread. More than 400 employees were dismissed from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and 132 from the Prosecutor General's Office.
