It has been announced that the largest machine-building plant, Azovmash, is cutting its workforce by half. This will leave approximately 5 people without jobs.
According to employees, there's a long line at the Azovmash HR department. Dozens of workers have come to collect their workbooks: "The machine builders were laid off because there's no money to pay wages—the plant is barely receiving any orders. People are complaining they haven't worked for six months."
As former plant employee Vitaliy recounted: "We were working at two-thirds of our full-time job. But we're not getting paid. Our last paycheck was in August. They gave us 300 hryvnias, and that was it." The only thing the laid-off workers are hoping for is help from the employment service, but judging by the current situation in the country, even that is out of the question.
As it has become known, Azovmash has accumulated multi-million dollar debts in wages to workers and is also obligated to pay large sums to creditors.
This plant, or rather what remains of it, belongs to one of Viktor Yanukovych’s closest associates, Yuriy Ivanyushchenko (Yura Yenakievsky), although formally his children own the enterprise.
As previously reported on the program "Secret Materials," local residents are actively "cutting up" equipment from the Azvomash plant, after which they sell it for scrap metal. The active "cutting up" of the plant began after Andrey Kargin, director of the Mariupol City Council's Department of Economics, stated that the only option to resolve the wage payment problem was to initiate bankruptcy proceedings and sell off Azvomash's assets.
