The bank paid 48% per annum on the 500 million deposit.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the seizure of 284 million hryvnias that were illegally transferred from Rodovid Bank to a private company account. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs' press service.
The company obtained the funds using forged documents, masquerading as interest on a deposit. Police are currently trying to identify those involved in this scam.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs' report doesn't name any names. Meanwhile, a lawsuit filed by Rodovid Bank against Ukrgaz-Energo, a company linked to Gazprom and Dmytro Firtash, involving a similar amount, can be found in the court registry. It notes that the commercial entity deposited 552 million hryvnias in February 2008 at 9% per annum. In March 2009, the parties signed an additional agreement, raising the interest rate to a staggering 48%.
A few days later, a temporary administration was brought into the bank, but Ukrgaz-Energo still managed to receive its interest in 2010.
The lawsuit notes that Rodovid's authorized capital at the time was only 435 million hryvnias, and therefore not only did it not have the right to pay such interest without the board's consent, but it also had no right to accept such a deposit.
Rodovid Bank, which filed the lawsuit in early 2014, won the court case.
