A scandal is brewing at First National Channel. Is Alasania planning to create a public television channel?

Zurab Alasania avoided direct questions about who will own shares in the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine.

As has become known, on April 17 of this year, the Law on Public Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine was adopted. According to this law, a public legal entity must be created on the basis of state-owned companies. At a Cabinet meeting, a resolution was adopted establishing the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine, 100% of whose shares are to be owned by the state.

The full text of this resolution, however, has never appeared on the official government portal. However, it was obtained in printed form by NTKU head Zurab Alasania. The most interesting part of it is the content of the third clause, which concerns the closed private placement of shares. This clause implies that a "public" name, meaning something owned by the entire company, could be sold tomorrow behind closed doors.

The First National staff decided to raise a number of controversial issues with NTU management. But as expected, Mr. Alasania avoided the topic and returned to the same old story about the need for reform, the existence of state television and radio as a typical sign of totalitarianism, and so on. Several direct questions were asked. For example, Mark Gres, head of the documentary film studio, directly inquired about who would become the shareholders of the public yet private television and radio company.

Deputy CEO Oleksandr Liev responded. He stated that the most "transparent and honest fund" would manage the shares. But as Mark Gres noted, it was precisely this fund that, in its time, fairly and openly sold even such a giant as Naftogaz for pennies. The same likely awaits the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine.

Most NTU employees believe that public television will likely simply cease to exist. The channel's shares will be seized by those with the money to do so, namely Firtash, Pinchuk, Lyovochkin, Kolomoisky, and others like them. Going into more detail, the question of why Kharkiv native Alasania is heading the channel also remains open. Since no one has provided clear answers to these questions, NTU employees have created an initiative group. This group intends to organize a meeting between the channel's entire staff and the country's leadership. Similar groups are being created at other television and radio stations.

REFERENCE:

In 2006, Alasania became the founder of the MediaPort agency (news releases were broadcast on the S-TET TV channel until November 2009) and the weekly MediaPost (published from June 29, 2006 to October 4, 2007).

On July 5, 2005, he was appointed director of the Kharkiv Regional State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and worked there for almost five years until June 4, 2010.

In 2013, he became one of the journalists at Hromadske.tv.

On March 25, 2014, he was appointed CEO of the National Television Company of Ukraine. According to some publications, Alasania is very close with the current Minister of Internal Affairs, Avakov. They both began their careers in Kharkiv. This explains his appointment after the revolution.

Alasania's deputy, Alexander Liev, was once the head of Crimea's "water management" and served as head of the Ministry of Resorts and Tourism. According to numerous publications, he was implicated in Crimean real estate scams and the embezzlement of funds for flood relief in Bukovina. Liev was also the main spokesman for the Party of Regions in Crimea and actively defended all actions of the Party of Regions.
