In the Zhytomyr region, officers of the Security Service of Ukraine stopped the illegal extraction of minerals of national importance on an industrial scale, reports press office power department.
According to preliminary data from the pre-trial investigation, a former member of the Zhytomyr City Council organized an illegal business. He created several commercial entities under his control. Under the guise of reservoir development, and without permits, the former deputy's commercial entity began subsoil development and large-scale mineral extraction on agricultural land.
On ten sites with a total area of over 9 hectares, the businessmen washed the rock using industrial methods with the help of specialized equipment: earth movers and excavators.
The illegally mined mixture was sold for cash to individuals and businesses in the Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, and Khmelnytskyi regions at market prices, circumventing tax laws. Every night, trucks removed an average of 600-800 tons of sand from the illegal quarry.
Furthermore, according to the State Environmental Inspectorate, the land has suffered irreversible damage. It is now unfit for its intended use and cannot be restored," the statement reads.

An expert assessment is being conducted to determine the amount of environmental damage. An engineering and environmental assessment confirmed damages to the state of over 42 million hryvnias in the last nine months alone.
