The National Environmental Council of Ukraine is asking the President of Ukraine to raise the issue of dismissing Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ihor Shevchenko. This was announced in an open written appeal from the National Environmental Council and its Chairperson, Tetyana Tymochko.
It is clarified that the National Council, which unites all-Ukrainian environmental organizations, criticized the minister's report and, in a letter to Poroshenko, asked him to address the current state of public administration in the area of environmental protection. The letter also states that Minister Shevchenko should not hold the position of head of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, as he lacks the necessary knowledge and experience in this area.
The appeal also notes that Ihor Shevchenko, in his speech summing up his 100 days in office, failed to mention environmental management reform or European integration. The latter, according to the National Council, is a priority for the Ministry of Natural Resources. The National Council also notes that the Minister of Ecology presented facts and events in his report that occurred earlier and without his involvement. However, Shevchenko appropriated these as his own achievements. Thus, the annual work plan of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ukraine for 2015, approved by the Minister on February 16, 2015, is vague and unspecific.
Members of the National Council appeal to President Poroshenko to review the current situation in public administration in the areas of environmental protection and natural resource use, and to raise the issue of dismissing Ihor Shevchenko, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine. Furthermore, environmental NGOs propose holding a public discussion of candidates for the position of Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
It was previously reported that journalists from the 1+1 television channel conducted their own investigation, revealing that Ihor Shevchenko was pushed into the position of Minister of Ecology by gas millionaire Oleksandr Onishchenko. He allegedly paid Yulia Tymoshenko $10 million for the position, having received the quota for her participation in the coalition agreement. Tymoshenko and Ihor Shevchenko have a long-standing friendship. The current Minister of Ecology previously served as her freelance advisor and co-owner of the law firm Shevchenko, Ditkovsky & Partners. This firm worked closely with former Minister of Ecology Eduard Stavytsky. Stavytsky and Onishchenko earned a good income developing oil and gas fields in Ukraine.
Ministry of Environment employees say they have never had such an incompetent and elusive minister.
