Oleh Nedava is one of former President Poroshenko's pillars in the Donbas. He appeared there quite unexpectedly, but quickly staked out his place as Poroshenko's main fixer. His deal with the former guarantor was ridiculously simple, writes Anticorrosive
For his part, Nedava supported all of Porokh's initiatives, even those he disagreed with and those that provoked idiosyncrasies in Donbas. Despite everything, Nedava voted in parliament for rapprochement with NATO, the language law, Ukrainian quotas for TV and radio, the so-called healthcare reform, and other whims of the guarantor. The MP supported absolutely all of the outgoing regime's anti-social budgets. He cared nothing for the people's opinions on these issues. He commented with delight on his anti-popular votes.
What did he get in return? Certainly not the loyalty of voters, who were irritated by their elected official's position, which ran counter to their interests. But that didn't bother Nedava.
He got what he'd hoped for: the ability to exert unlimited influence over financial flows in Donbas, over the budget tranches allocated to the region and channeled through Nedava's sensitive fingers. The BPP MP had such a strong grip on these flows that not a single serious project in Donbas was ever decided without his involvement.
And if you take Slavyansk, Svyatogorsk, and the surrounding areas, Nedava was king and god. He controlled all local businesses. Or rather, not controlled them, but terrorized them. No one could even open a kiosk without a tip from Nedava's representative. All heads of administrations and local governments were required to approve draft decisions with the "supervisor." And the latter only approved projects if he saw his own selfish interests in them.
A separate issue is Nedava's total control over the entire regional law enforcement system. He dictated who to terrorize and who to ignore. This allowed him to drive out all his competitors and install his own protégés in their place.
The most high-profile episode highlighting Nedava's devotion to Poroshenko's team was Lutsenko's wife's trust in him. It was while addressing Nedava that Iryna Lutsenko screamed from the parliamentary chamber, expecting the "goat to be carried out." "Oleg! Oleg, carry the goat out! Oleg! Nedava! Carry the goat out! Carry him out!"—these cries from the Prosecutor General's wife forever etched themselves into the annals of parliamentary debate in Ukraine and around the world.
Journalists are currently conducting several major investigations into Oleg Nedava in the region, which will expose all of Nedava's criminal schemes for enriching himself, as well as his exploitation of law enforcement for personal gain. Many interesting details will follow, revealing unusual sides to this colorful, criminal, and highly influential figure.
The inept attempts to disassociate himself from his patron, Petro Oleksiyovych Poroshenko, have proven largely unsuccessful. Today, Poroshenko continues to bank on Nedava in the Donbas, hoping to retain at least some influence in the region. Time will tell whether the intimidation tactics of local elites will work this time around. But it's unlikely anyone will want to listen to the toxic criminal elements of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc right now.
