As previously reported, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko submitted a motion to the Verkhovna Rada to strip MP Oleksandr Onyshchenko of his parliamentary immunity. Subsequently, the head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Nazar Kholodnytskyi, delivered a document ordering his arrest. Such drastic measures were taken after the discovery of a corrupt scheme involving the purchase of gas from the Ukrgazvydobuvannya concern and its subsequent resale through fictitious exchanges, which caused damage to the state amounting to approximately 3 billion hryvnias.
But the scandalous MP denies his guilt: "...We received an offer from Ukrgazvydobuvannya. As I understand it, they're preparing it for privatization and selling it to someone. We simply sell it and are reimbursed for the amount invested in these companies... that's around 2 billion," adding, "During these negotiations, everything was moving toward the conclusion that if they reimburse the value of our company, we'll hand it over, and this sum, 1,3 billion, will be repaid from this money. Therefore, there's no criminal activity involved; no one is planning to flee or steal anything. I'm staying in Ukraine. We're simply negotiating with Ukrgazvydobuvannya and the tax authorities."
