Former Rector of the Irpin Tax Academy, Petro Melnyk, wants to head the Irpin City Council. The former Party of Regions member wrote about this on his Facebook page on October 3, 2015.
The former rector noted that he decided to head Irpin after numerous appeals from Irpin residents. Melnyk stated that the Irpin region has become his home, "he knows every road here, and his life's work is here—the National University of the State Tax Service of Ukraine."
Former rector Melnyk emphasized that he and his team are running in the local government elections as members of the Peasant Party of Ukraine.
Petro Melnyk was caught accepting a bribe during Viktor Yanukovych's presidency. The court subsequently sentenced him to house arrest. However, Melnyk managed to flee Ukraine. In 2014, after the Revolution of Dignity, the former rector returned to Ukraine and was detained by law enforcement. In court, the prosecutor's office requested a nine-year prison sentence, confiscation of property, and a three-year ban on holding relevant positions. However, the Irpen city court acquitted him completely..
