Petr Suslensky decided to "reconstruct" the staircase on Peyzazhka

A candidate for parliament is dismantling Kyiv's oldest staircase for PR purposes.

People's Deputy candidate Petro Suslensky is dismantling Kyiv's oldest staircase, which runs from the Historical Museum to Kozhemyaki Street. Suslensky plans to use the oak planks removed from the staircase on Peizazhka Street to create "street furniture."

Local residents told LB.ua about illegal "repair work."

The "reconstruction" of the stairs on Peizazhka Street began on Friday, October 17. That afternoon, a van carrying a candidate's advertisement arrived at the stairs, and workers began dismantling them. Local residents immediately responded, stopping the workers.

According to local activist and artist Arsen Savadov, Suslenskyi's stairway renovation is being carried out without permission from the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) or any other permits. Stanislav Demin, an architect and advisor to the Kyiv City State Administration, also confirmed the lack of permits.

"Such actions must be coordinated with the city. They're dismantling the staircase without a plan or permits. Someone decided to do a 'good deed,' without considering that they were creating a dangerous situation. Now they've started replacing the staircase's cladding, not realizing that the supports are in disrepair and that they can't cover the oak staircase with the decking they brought," Demin said.

At the initiative of activists, the dismantling of the staircase was stopped. It is currently unknown whether Suslensky will receive permits for the reconstruction of the staircase.

Suslensky heads the development company Sun Development. He is running as an independent candidate in District No. 223 (Kyiv).
