Oleksandr Melnyk was arrested on September 4 on suspicion of ordering the murders of Kremenchuk Mayor Oleg Babayev and Judge Oleksandr Lobodenko.
According to the Poltava Regional Prosecutor's Office, the court hearing took place on November 1, but the decision was only announced today. The Oktiabrsky District Court of Poltava extended Melnik's detention for another two months, until January 3, 2015.
Melnik's lawyers filed several appeals seeking a lesser preventive measure, but the judges of the Poltava Regional Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the Poltava Oktiabrsky District Court.
As a reminder, on February 11, an unknown assailant fired several shots at a judge of the Avtozavodsky District Court. Judge Alexander Lobodenko died in the hospital on February 12 at 1:40 a.m. He was scheduled to rule on the seizure of some of the Melnik family's property, but was unable to hear the case due to his death.
On July 26, 2014, Kremenchuk Mayor Oleg Babayev was killed by a gunshot to the chest near his place of residence.
On September 2, 2014, police reported the arrest of four suspects in Babayev’s murder.
Later, at a press conference in Kyiv, adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs Zorian Shkiryak announced that Oleksandr Kryzhanovsky and Oleksandr Melnyk, director of the local television company "Visit," had been detained on suspicion of involvement in the mayor's murder.
