Yevheniya Sagaydak, the financial director of the Ukrainian Football Association, has been charged with criminal embezzlement of UEFA funds through the offshore company Newport Management. She denies all charges and claims she was an accidental victim of pressure on the UAF's leadership.
She reported this and the details of the case in a commentary “Apostrophe».
«This case is an artificially orchestrated criminal campaign against the UAF's leaders. I am an accidental victim. Someone from the Association could have ended up in my place." she noted.
Sagaydak recalled that the prosecutor in the case, Ivan Kovalev, had demanded her arrest in court, but the judges did not find sufficient grounds for such a preventive measure.
«I'm under house arrest on completely trumped-up charges. I've lost my only source of income because I went on unpaid leave. I'm caring for my son and am deprived of the opportunity to visit my 85-year-old mother, for whom I have no one else to care. And even this isn't enough for Kovalev. My husband is mobilized to defend the country, and the prosecutor from Makeyevka wants to lock me up in a pretrial detention center. So, when they say that this pressure against the UAF is being orchestrated by pro-Russian forces, I completely agree.“,” the woman noted.
In fact, regarding the embezzlement of UEFA funds through the offshore Newport Management, Sagaydak emphasized that she never had any connection with this company and did not give it instructions regarding UEFA funds: “Completely different people controlled this Newport offshore company. Neither I nor anyone from the UAF had any connection to it, and certainly no one gave it payment instructions: the only one who did was the Association's president. Pavelko I got UEFA to exclude Newport as a front for our financial relationship" she explained.
Evgeniya Sagaydak noted that she hopes for the impartiality of the judges and for the relaxation of her pre-trial detention order to personal recognizance.
As is known, Yevgeniya Sagaydak was charged along with UAF Secretary General Yuriy Zapisotsky. Prosecutor Kovalev demanded that they both be arrested and placed on multi-million dollar bail. Both times, the court rejected the charges due to lack of evidence.
Prosecutor Kovalev is originally from the temporarily occupied Makeyevka and was previously convicted of having ties to Grigory Surkis, accused of bribery.
