The decision to close criminal proceedings against former Naftogaz CEO Bakulin has been overturned – the Prosecutor General's Office.

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine has overturned its decision to close criminal proceedings against former executives of Naftogaz Ukrainy, headed by Yevhen Bakulin.

The Prosecutor General's Office recalled that, at the request of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the prosecutor of the Prosecutor General's Office, who exercised procedural leadership in the criminal proceedings against the former executives of the Naftogaz of Ukraine National Joint-Stock Company, headed by Yevhen Bakulin, closed the said proceedings on the basis of Part 3 of Article 284 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine.

"On the same day, after receiving information from the leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine, the decision to close the criminal case was overturned by Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin," the statement noted.

In this regard, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Vitaliy Yarema, has ordered an internal investigation, the purpose of which is to examine the facts and circumstances of the closure of the criminal proceedings and the legality of the procedural decision.

As reported, E. Bakulin, who headed Naftogaz of Ukraine since March 2010, was detained on March 21, 2014 on suspicion of embezzlement on an especially large scale.

On March 23, the court issued a decision on a preventive measure, according to which he will be arrested or required to post bail in the amount of 1,5 billion hryvnias.

On March 28, the Kyiv Court of Appeals remanded Yevgeny Bakulin in custody. The defense intended to file a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights regarding "his unlawful detention and torture."

On April 25, the Pechersky Court of Kyiv released E. Bakulin on bail of 10 million UAH.
