A corruption scheme at the Sumy State Environmental Inspectorate has been exposed.

bribe bucksIn February 2015, the Sumy Oblast Prosecutor's Office opened a criminal investigation into extortion of unlawful benefits by employees of the State Environmental Inspectorate's environmental control posts in the Sumy Oblast. This was reported by the press service of the Sumy Oblast Prosecutor's Office.

 

During a pre-trial investigation by the regional prosecutor's office, together with employees of the State Service for Combating Economic Crime of the Sumy City Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in Sumy Oblast, on March 2, 2015, the head of the Yekaterinovka environmental control post was detained for demanding and receiving an illegal benefit of 2700 hryvnias from his subordinate. The official demanded this sum in exchange for not dismissing his subordinate from his position. After the arrest, the department head reported that the state inspector of the Bachevsk environmental control post had been demanding the funds from him and his subordinates every month for transfer to the leadership of the State Environmental Inspectorate in Sumy Oblast. On the same day, law enforcement officers detained the inspector of the Bachevsk environmental control post while accepting a bribe of 2700 hryvnias from the head of the Yekaterinovka environmental control post.

 

The case is being investigated under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: bribery on an especially large scale or by an official holding a particularly important position. The penalty under this article provides for imprisonment for a term of eight to twelve years, with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years, and confiscation of property.
