Russian mobile operator MTS may change its brand to the British Vodafone.

mtsAccording to Kapital, citing sources in the telecommunications industry, mobile operator MTS is considering acquiring the rights to the British brand Vodafone on a franchise basis to further its telecommunications business in Ukraine.

The National Communications Commission did indeed confirm this request. MTS did indeed contact them for advice on this matter.

The British operator Vodafone leases its brand in some countries. For the use of its brand, Vodafone charges 3-4% of the company's revenue. In Iceland, Fjarskipti has long provided services under the Vodafone Iceland brand. Russia's MTS has been a Vodafone partner since 2008. The agreement between these companies provides for joint procurement and use of services and equipment.

As a reminder, MTS is the second-largest operator in Ukraine by subscriber base. As of the end of June, it served 23,07 million customers, second only to Kyivstar. MTS Ukraine is owned by the Russian MTS Group. In October, the Russians decided to sell part of their Ukrainian business.
