The Chernihiv Oblast Prosecutor's Office, "given the complexity, large volume, and urgency of the case," transferred two criminal investigations from the city police department to the Investigative Department of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs regarding the embezzlement of budget funds during work performed for the Chernihiv Vodokanal public utility company. This was reported by Vysoky Val, citing the press service of the Chernihiv Oblast Prosecutor's Office.
Both criminal cases are investigating cases identified by regulatory authorities of budget funds allocated for work being siphoned off through contractor firms to the accounts of business entities with signs of fictitiousness.
According to the region's first deputy prosecutor, Oleksandr Shmorgun, the first case involves funds totaling 64 million hryvnias for work to replace damaged sections of water and sewer systems.
"In the second case, criminal proceedings are underway to investigate the misappropriation of nearly 300 hryvnias of budget funds during construction of a pressure sewer pipeline," he explained.
However, it's too early to draw a full picture of the use of funds or to determine the final assessment of the actions of certain individuals. "But these facts raise suspicions of embezzlement of budgetary funds, and therefore must be thoroughly investigated and legally assessed. We currently insist on an objective and principled investigation, and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that it is precisely that during our prosecutorial oversight," Shmorgun concluded.
