SBU and State Fiscal Service officers after the program aired pennies The 1+1 TV channel is trying to hush up facts of corruption.
As a reminder, on March 28, 2016, the investigative journalism program Groshi aired a segment in which journalists independently opened a currency exchange office. The program showed how law enforcement agencies cover up the illegal operation of currency exchange offices and name specific monthly fees for their protection. Furthermore, the journalists presented video evidence and named the law enforcement officers profiting from protecting these businesses.
The program also reported that the National Bank had created all the conditions for the emergence of such illegal businesses. These primarily included currency restrictions on cash withdrawals, a 1,5% pension tax on the purchase or sale of foreign currency, and the absence of any inspections of exchange offices following the NBU reform.
The release of this story, according to journalists, prompted the leadership of the SBU and the State Fiscal Service to urgently demonstrate the results of their work. The press service of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine sent out a press release stating that 31 searches had been conducted on March 29, 2016, and over 3 million hryvnias had been seized. Such actions, as journalists from the program Groshi noted, could be perceived as an attempt to cover up the corruption exposed in the 1+1 story.
