Tekhmorgidrostroy reported on the cleanup of the Azov Sea bottom.

A dredging company is implementing an environmental project in the waters of the Berdyansk and Mariupol ports.

In Ukraine, the trend toward increasing corporate social responsibility in the shipping sector is gaining momentum. For example, the Nikolaev-based company Tekhmorgidrostroy, from August to early November, removed 3,815 cubic meters of soil at its own expense (1,9 cubic meters in the Mariupol port and 1,8 cubic meters in the Berdyansk port). This was reported in a report on the website "Komsomolskaya Pravda v Ukraine."

The article states that the problems of dredging and cleaning the seabed have been unresolved for decades, so the Sea of Azov could eventually turn into a large, muddy puddle. Loading and unloading operations at all the country's seaports are carried out using cranes. Some of the cargo falls into the water, littering the sea with rebar, wire, scrap metal, and other debris.
"Dredging the seabed will increase ship tonnage, which in turn will increase company profits and budget contributions. However, for various reasons, such important work has been neglected since the early 2000s. This has led to the deplorable state of the marine ecosystem and, naturally, to a decline in shipping revenues," the article states.

The author notes that the littered seabed is reducing the number of ships calling at Ukrainian ports. In August, for example, Mariupol Port Director Oleksandr Oleynik stated that the navigable draft at one port had decreased from the stated 8 meters to 7,2 meters. If the seabed isn't addressed urgently, he estimates, this will lead to a monthly decrease in cargo traffic at the port of 100 tons and a drop in revenue of 11-12 million hryvnias per month.

In mid-2015, officials took on this problem: following an open tender, Tekhmorgidrostroy LLC (Nikolaev), a national leader in its field that handles major contracts in the country and abroad, took on the task of clearing and dredging the bottom.
