Viktor Shokin
Deputy Head of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Prosecutor General's Office (GPU) Volodymyr Shapakin and Deputy Prosecutor of the Kyiv Region Oleksiy Korniets have resigned from their positions. The corresponding order was signed by GPU Head Vkitor Shokin.
Shokin's deputy, David Sarkvalidze, will lead the investigation into these two Prosecutor General's Office employees. Deputy Prosecutor General Vitaly Kasko is overseeing the procedural aspects of the case ( read more about him in the article " Vitaly Kasko – Swindler, Corrupt Official, the "Shot Down Pilot" ).
Earlier, on July 5, Shapakin and Korniets were detained. A search of their workplaces and home revealed a large sum of money ($500,000), weapons, and jewelry.
Following the arrests, media reports surfaced that Viktor Shokin and his deputy, Guzyr, were attempting to exonerate the detained GPU officers and were pressuring the investigators. This information was confirmed by Kasko, who participated in the arrest operation.
An interesting fact is that at the time of the arrest of his employees, the head of the GPU was on vacation.
As a reminder, yesterday the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Combating Corruption recommended that MPs vote no confidence in the head of the Prosecutor General's Office. Members of Parliament, for their part, have already collected over 80 signatures calling for the resignation of Viktor Shokin. The current Prosecutor General is known to have been actively involved in the "Gongadze case," the "Kolesnikov case," the "Yushchenko poisoning," and similar high-profile cases.
