An employee of the seized Krymprotrebsoyuz: Maybe self-defense just needs to get insurance?

The Crimean People's Militia has seized the building of the Krymprotrebsoyuz Joint-Stock Company in Simferopol. One of the company's employees, currently inside the building, suggested on her Facebook page that the invaders may simply be "playing it safe."

“Open the window, I’ll give you the reports,” the promoter told me, “there’s a masked show at the main entrance,” she announced at the very beginning of the “invasion.”

"There are a lot of onlookers under our window, employees of various offices who can't get in, and journalists. We can hear various snatches of words: 'Can I get you some beer?', 'Are you staying long? Maybe I should bring some food?', 'What if I get sick?', 'They're not commenting on anything,' and 'No, they're not on the list of nationalized properties.' Masked faces periodically poke their heads in, look, and then leave. One asked where the insurance company was. Maybe they just need insurance?" writes a Krymprebsoyuz employee.

It's not hard to guess the reason for these unexpected takeovers. The fact is that today it was announced that 28 markets in the republic, which are actually owned by the company "Krymprebsoyuz," have been nationalized. As Acting Head of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov stated, the decision to nationalize was made "due to the unsatisfactory condition of the markets."

"There's no governance today, taxes aren't being paid, entrepreneurs are being squeezed, rent for retail space is being collected at double the rate—officially and unofficially... People (he's specifically referring to the directors of the Krymprotrebsoyuz markets) are circling the Council of Ministers with bags of cash, unsure of who to bribe to keep them in charge," Aksyonov said.
