Today, Kyiv's Pechersky District Court ordered pretrial detention for Kostiantyn Vasylets, deputy chairman of the regional branch of the All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda," and Oleksandr Stankov, a member of the Sich Battalion. They are suspected of organizing mass riots in Kyiv on August 31.
Vasilets will be kept under house arrest until December 3, and Stankov will be held in pretrial detention until the same day. Stankov has also been granted an alternative: bail of 415 hryvnias. However, their lawyers claim that the case against Vasilets and Stankov is a "contract" and "politically motivated." Defense attorney Vsevolod Sokalyuk told reporters that the court received orders "from above." He also claimed this should deprive Svoboda of its leadership in the elections.
It should be noted that after the events of August 31, police were able to identify the Svoboda members who participated in the riots and conducted searches in the homes of the movement's activists in Kyiv, Odesa, and the Ivano-Frankivsk region.
Meanwhile, the Kyiv Court of Appeals returned the passport of former Svoboda member Eduard Leonov, although it left him under house arrest. Leonov is also suspected of organizing the riots outside the parliament building on August 31.
