Kyiv Court of Appeals Judge Volodymyr Melnyk ruled to return $1 million confiscated by customs to Italian Marilene Pizuto. According to the judge, she did not attempt to hide the cash from customs officers and therefore did not have time to commit any offense. This was reported in the program's report. Journalists discovered that an Italian citizen attempted to smuggle over $783 and €230 from Kyiv to Milan. The money was packed in boxes bearing the logo of the Sanahunt brand, owned by the infamous Oksana Moroz-Hunt. Marilena Pizuto claimed at customs that she was carrying notebooks in the boxes. In court, the Italian woman testified that the money, instead of notebooks, was mistakenly placed in her suitcase by storekeeper Oksana Moroz, with whom she was staying during her stay in Ukraine.
Interestingly, Marilena Pizuto attempted to export cash from Ukraine through the "green corridor." The "green corridor" can only be used if the person is not carrying goods that require written declaration or that are subject to legal export prohibitions or restrictions.
The trial court ordered the confiscation of all the money and the payment of a fine. Meanwhile, Kyiv Court of Appeals Judge Volodymyr Melnyk ruled that Marilena Pizuto had not yet committed the offense, merely attempting to do so, and returned the money to her.
