Commenting on the protest in Kirovohrad demanding lustration of the heads of the city and regional prosecutor's offices, Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema stated that the situation requires dialogue, and that there are no legal grounds for dismissing Kirovohrad Prosecutor Yevhen Vasilyev, Acting Prosecutor of the Kirovohrad Region Leonid Panchenko, and Deputy Regional Prosecutor Yevhen Zdorenko. This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine, citing the Prosecutor General's Office press service.
As a reminder, Prokurorskaya Pravda previously reported that, starting November 24, a group of individuals in Kirovohrad, under the slogan of lustration, have been picketing the regional prosecutor's office building. The action has included the burning of tires and other protests.
"Certainly, the freedom to hold peaceful public events is an inalienable right of every citizen, guaranteed by the Constitution of Ukraine. At the same time, what is guaranteed by law should not degenerate into lawlessness or violent acts. Ukraine has sufficient effective mechanisms for communicating one's point of view, including through dialogue, and not just through protest monologues," the agency's press service quoted Yarema as saying.
He noted that the aforementioned heads of the Kirovohrad city prosecutor's office and the Kirovohrad regional prosecutor's office are not covered by the "Law on the Purification of Government." "The demands for their release have no legal basis. Moreover, a thorough investigation was conducted into these individuals' possible involvement in abuse of power or corruption, and no such cases were found," the statement reads.
At the same time, since the appointment of city and regional prosecutorial leaders is carried out by the Prosecutor General, taking into account the position of Kirovohrad region public activists, Vitaliy Yarema is ready to "consider all comments regarding their activities in a direct and frank dialogue."
