The parliamentary coalition is disintegrating – Batkivshchyna intends to leave. Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko announced this on the sidelines today.
The reason given was that Tymoshenko and others had been offered up to a million dollars to not vote on the government's resignation. The former prime minister stated that she saw leaving the Batkivshchyna coalition as the only solution. MP Serhiy Kaplin also announced a similar move. He noted that he was leaving the coalition in order to secure the Cabinet's resignation and new elections.
However, Tymoshenko's political force's withdrawal from the coalition will not change the situation—the coalition currently has 243 MPs, 19 of whom are from Batkivshchyna. A majority of 226 MPs is sufficient for the coalition to function.
Overall, an extremely interesting situation is developing within the government, exacerbated by the fact that Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk is openly accused of corruption.
