Three banks, which were withdrawn from the market and belonged to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his associates, are currently engaged in legal proceedings against the National Bank of Ukraine. This was stated by National Bank Governor Valeria Gontareva during Question Time in the Verkhovna Rada, UNIAN reports.
"Regarding Yanukovych's banks, as far as I know, three banks are currently suing us because they belonged to Yanukovych, and we removed them from the market. One of them is the All-Ukrainian Development Bank. Yanukovych's bank," she said, responding to accusations of the National Bank's lenient attitude toward banks owned by high-ranking officials of the previous government, including the former president.
The head of the NBU noted that the All-Ukrainian Development Bank has no liquidity issues, which is why it had to be withdrawn from the market in three stages, as legislation does not allow for such a bank to be withdrawn in a single stage. "But we did it. Because there are sanctions, and we were able to do it," she added.
As UNIAN reported, in 2014, the NBU declared 33 banks insolvent, and the Deposit Guarantee Fund began removing these banks from the market. In early December, the Fund announced that 10 more banks were on the way.
On November 27, the National Bank declared the All-Ukrainian Development Bank insolvent, and as a result, the Deposit Guarantee Fund appointed a temporary administration for the bank for a period of three months, until February 27, 2015.
The National Bank explained its decision to classify the bank as insolvent by citing the imposition of sanctions on the bank's shareholder in the form of asset freezes by the European Union.
The MAKO Group of Companies, owned by the son of former Ukrainian President Oleksandr Yanukovych, intends to appeal, in accordance with established procedure, the decision of the National Bank of Ukraine to declare the All-Ukrainian Development Bank, which is part of the group of companies, insolvent.
The All-Ukrainian Development Bank (Kyiv) has been operating in the Ukrainian market since 2009 and is part of a group of large financial institutions. The bank is part of the MAKO group of companies, owned by Oleksandr Yanukovych. During Yanukovych's presidency, the bank's assets increased almost 13-fold.
