According to European media reports, Dmitry Firtash has been targeted for assassination.
According to the Austrian publication Die Presse, the oligarch is being hunted by Eastern European assassins. This is further supported by the fact that Dmytro Firtash is protected around the clock by an armed army of bodyguards. This was also observed during the recent Ukrainian parliamentary elections. On October 26, the oligarch arrived at the polling station surrounded by numerous security guards.
Journalists from Die Presse conducted their own investigation. According to German intelligence documents they obtained, Firtash's assassination has been planned since last spring. A group of hitmen from Hungary and Romania is planning the assassination. It was also revealed that they have rented premises in Vienna to organize the crime.
According to the newspaper, Austrian Prosecutor General Werner Pleischl is also aware of the fact that the murder was being planned.
The Austrian publication believes that this crime is being orchestrated from Hungary, given that several of Firtash's major enterprises were located there. However, in 2009, he was "asked" to leave and forced out of the country's gas business. The oligarch may also have had unclear relations with the management of the Hungarian gas trader Emfesz, which was sold for one dollar to the Swiss company RosGas. The publication believes that Dmytro Firtash has numerous enemies in both Hungary and Ukraine. And after his extradition to the United States, he could tell American investigators about machinations in the Eastern European gas business. The Ukrainian oligarch has been in Vienna for eight months. His trial is ongoing. The question of his extradition to the United States is still open.
As is well known, Ukrainian oligarch Dmytro Firtash has recently been appearing in public surrounded by twelve security guards—six on each side. This began shortly after Austrian police detained Firtash at the Vienna office of his holding company, Group DF, on March 12. He was released after paying a record bail of €125 million in Austrian court proceedings. His extradition to the United States remains pending.
According to the American publication DW, Dmitry Firtash is suspected in the United States of creating a criminal group, bribing local government officials in one state, and money laundering. The Ukrainian oligarch faces a maximum combined sentence of 50 years for the crimes he is accused of.
