Seven years ago, the former management of the state-owned bank Ukreximbank received an extra million dollars in loan.
According to Kyiv's Pechersky District Court, the Prosecutor General's Office has launched an investigation into this case. The defendants include the bank's top management, as well as the ceramic tile manufacturer Atem. In September 2007, the company entered into a contract with Darlet Marchante Technologie SA (DMT) of France. According to the contract, the European company was to supply Ukraine with equipment for the production of biaxially oriented polypropylene film (BOPP film) worth €19,95 million.
In December, Atem signed a loan agreement with Ukreximbank, and in January 2008, the bank signed an agreement with Natixis (France). It became Ukreximbank's correspondent bank. The French bank issued a loan of $28,52 million to the Ukrainian bank. The requested amount of €19,9 million was equivalent to approximately $27,66 million. Furthermore, Ukreximbank failed to inform Atem of the agreement with the French bank.
On September 25, the court allowed GPU investigators to seize equipment from Atem and also granted access to documents related to the case.
It's important to remember that Viktor Kapustin, the Chairman of the Board of Ukreximbank, resigned in April 2010. He was replaced by Denis Kireyev, a member of the bank's supervisory board, who was appointed to the board through a parliamentary quota.
