A former Akhmetov manager has taken over Ukrposhta and has already promised layoffs.

Igor Smelyansky, an employee of the American audit firm KPMG, has been elected the new head of Ukrposhta. This was announced in a statement by the Ministry of Economic Development.

Mr. Smelyansky is currently reportedly working in New York. He previously worked at Rinat Akhmetov's bank, FUIB. Smelyansky has 17 years of experience in financial and strategic consulting at various audit firms.

As a reminder, a competition was announced for the position of head of Ukrposhta. Forty-eight candidates applied, with four candidates advancing to the finals. Ultimately, Smelyansky beat out Gintautas Mažeika, Oleksandr Pertsovsky, and Harro van Graafeiland in the final round.

Smelyansky has already announced the company's immediate plans, which include: privatizing a 25% stake in the company, changing management and restructuring the company, implementing a new salary system, including staff reductions, revising service tariffs, approving Ukrposhta's long-term strategy, and considering the possibility of creating a Postal Bank.
